Page title and meta description

Many websites make a number of mistakes when it comes to pages meta title and meta descriptions.

Firstly the page title and description are shown in Google search results therefore an important indicator for Google and consumers scanning through a list of 10+ sites.

It’s important that;

  1. Pages within your website do not share the same keyword phrases in their page title or description
  2. Try not to exceed 70 characters for your page titles & 155 characters for page descriptions
  3. The main keywords relevant to that page are included in the title & description
  4. don't stuff as many keywords in as you can. This isn't consumer or Google friendly
  5. Keep it clear, short and precise
  6. Above all do not launch a new site with generic non relevant titles as this does impact how Google perceives your website.
When Google encounters an empty or irrelevant page title it can and will fill it with content from the given page it deems to be suitable. This further emphases the importance of being relevant to your page, topic and audience. Trying to dupe the system could result in duping your business.

Examples 1 & 2 had missing and/or irrelevant keywords/content in their page title/ meta descriptions, while example 3 can be deemed to be relevant to their service and audience.
