External links to your website still remain one of the strongest influencers as to where you come up in Google search results.

By understanding how others measure and weigh the quality of a link allows you to adjust your approach.

Here are the top 5 ways to evaluate a links quality;

  1. Relevance: seek out links from websites that share the same theme, industry or topic
  2. Quality over quantity: a few links from quality articles should be preferred over a large number of links from lesser quality pages - locations from a third party site
  3. Diverse keywords: Avoid using the same keywords in links. Variety is a must and dont be afraid to include your brand keywords
  4. Link diversity: If you can influence links to your site, the aim is to link to the most relevant page. Don't just link to your homepage because you want it to show up higher in Google
  5. Natural footprint: Applying the above will help create a natural link profile. If your links look fabricated you can be assured any benefits will be short lived. Undoing this in order to overcome a Google penalty will usually be 10 times harder
